Coriell Institute for Medical Research is a world-renowned center for human genome research. Having outgrown their space, they needed to create new administrative space so their labs and cryogenic storage could expand. Being located across the street from Cooper Hospital and nestled on the edge of an historic residential neighborhood, the very tight urban site was challenging. MAI designed an addition that neatly mitigated the scale of the existing concrete lab structure while providing the cryogenic storage facility and office space needed by the institute.

Next up was the renovation of some of the existing laboratory space. Crowded and dark, Coriell sought to make these labs a bright showpiece to highlight the exciting work being performed there. Dramatic new windows were cut through the concrete walls to bring in daylight. Small labs were traded in for large open spaces filled with modular lab equipment and furniture. Interior glazing between the lab and administrative space increases visual connectivity and brightens the office space as well.
