As a part of a residential developer’s open space agreement, Darlington Fine Arts Center was offered a seven-acre site adjacent to the new subdivision. Given that the site was an old farmstead, the challenge for MAI was to develop an architecture for the new buildings that would respect the rural character of the original use and the agrarian tradition of the area.
Working around the remaining farmhouse, MAI set a pair of small interconnected structures with simple forms around the site that maintained the look and the scale of the old structures. The new buildings provided wonderful open spaces for art, theater, and dance classes.
