New Headquarters Renovation

Philadelphia Insurance Companies has called 1 Bala Plaza their headquarters for the past fifteen years, but looking forward, they wanted to improve the function and feel of their space to meet their needs for the next fifteen years and beyond. In conjunction with the building’s exterior improvements, MAI designed a sparkling new HQ space over four floors, utilizing active design principles to encourage employee physical activity and easy interaction between the departments.

Focused around a dramatic three-story communicating stair in a central glass pavilion, employees can take advantage of the multitude of collaboration spaces surrounding the stair. New open workstation zones improve departmental layouts and encourage communication, as well as providing more access to daylight and views for everyone. A main level dining/conference center with flexible partitions provides the company with plenty of formal and informal gathering areas and event spaces.

To ensure operations onsite could continue throughout the three-year construction period, MAI developed detailed phasing, restacking, and swing space plans to assist the PHLY facilities team. As Philadelphia Insurance continues to grow, MAI continues to serve their architectural needs, both at the home office and at satellites nationwide.
